Participant at Bike the Levees

Bring your bike and your friends for a tour of Portland’s levee system! The Multnomah County Drainage District and the Columbia Slough Watershed Council will lead this 17-mile bike trip on easy terrain along the 40-mile loop trail and upper Columbia Slough in Fairview/Troutdale.

Riders will learn about the functionality and history of Portland’s levee system which protects people and properties from flooding, as well as the work that’s being done to ensure that the levee system meets modern standards for public safety. Participants will also learn about the Vanport Flood of 1948 and discuss the lasting impacts on communities then and today.

Representatives from Levee Ready Columbia, a collaboration of government, business, and neighborhood organizations working together to evaluate the condition of our local levee network and to ensure valuable regional resources are protected in the future, will also share information. Riders will explore how the levees are managed for the balance of safety, recreation, and restoration.
